WHY
Rankings exist for almost everything — sports, restaurants, hotels — built from nothing but results. The more objective the list, the better it is. We always wondered why stocks and ETFs never got the same treatment. What exists instead is subjective opinion, or black-box scores nobody can check.
Risk gets the same treatment. Most tools measure it as volatility — how much a price wiggles, in either direction — when what actually matters to an investor is how far something fell, and how long it took to come back.
Stockrankr exists to fix both: objective rankings, built on facts, using drawdown as the measure of risk instead of volatility.
HOW
Stockrankr was founded by Dr Richard Johnsson — an economist (Uppsala, Oxford, Sydney) with an executive career in private banking and wealth management.
Long before founding Stockrankr, Richard lost money in the dot-com bubble. That loss led him to Benjamin Graham’s concepts of price vs. value and margin of safety, and to Warren Buffett’s first rule of investing — don’t lose money.
But finding the basic data for a proper comparison wasn’t easy.
“It could take me hours to download one annual report on my dial-up modem.”
That difficulty — finding simple, objective facts — never really went away.
And he found Maximum Drawdown more relevant than volatility when it comes to risk assessment. In 2010, he published the Risk-Return Ratio (RRR): the return divided by Maximum Drawdown, an objective formula for risk-adjusted returns that anyone can check on Wikipedia.
WHAT
Stockrankr ranks 10,000+ US-listed stocks and ETFs, updated daily, by Return, Drawdown, and Risk-Return Ratio (RRR).
Every security gets its own Stockrankr Matrix™ — a 3×3 grid across three timeframes — and the rare ones that perform consistently well across all nine cells earn a Stockrankr+ or Stockrankr++ mark.
Just the facts. The starting point for any security analysis.

The story behind the logo
Our logo is a variation of an Ingwaz — a rune from the Viking age. It means many things relevant to investing, like potential, growth, prosperity and long-term goals.
Our founder grew up in the heart of Viking country — in Sweden, where rune-stones still stand in the fields and the forests, and where the runic alphabet was in everyday use as recently as the early 1900s.
That’s Stockrankr in a rune.
