THE IDEA
Look at the table first. Research second.
Sport has league tables. Restaurants have stars. Stocks get opinions, tips and black-box scores. Stockrankr puts every US-listed stock and ETF into one ordered list, using the same formula for all of them. You start from the whole field, not from whatever someone is selling, and spend your research time only on the shortlist of past winners.
“Nobody predicts who’ll win the league by comparing revenue, stadium capacity, and squad size. They first look at the table. Investing deserves the same starting point.”
– Dr Richard Johnsson, founder
The 3 Ranking Lists
Investors care about the rewards, the risks and the combination of the two.
Reward
Return
Where the price ended against where it started, over the period you picked.
Risk
Max Drawdown
The largest fall from peak to trough during a period. A smaller drawdown is better.
RRR = Return ÷ Max Drawdown
Risk-Return-Ratio
The Risk-Return-Ratio (RRR) is the return divided by that Maximum Drawdown.
How the app works
A 50% fall needs a 100% gain to get back to even.
There are two kinds of risk: missing a gain, and losing money you already have. The first stings. The second costs you, and the maths works against you on the way back. That’s why Stockrankr treats maximum drawdown as the risk measure, and RRR as the risk-adjusted one.
Warren Buffett’s first rule of investing: don’t lose money.
Pick your preferred Maximum Drawdown
Pick your preferred Maximum Drawdown (MDD): 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25%. The MDD tab lists every security whose maximum drawdown stayed within that limit over 1, 3 and 5 years.
| If it falls | It needs to gain |
|---|---|
| 10% | 11% |
| 25% | 33% |
| 50% | 100% |
| 75% | 300% |
STOCKRANKR+ AND STOCKRANKR++
The needles in the haystack
Out of 10,000+ stocks and ETFs, fewer than 1 in 200 stay top-ranked on return, drawdown and RRR over 1, 3 and 5 years.
Stockrankr keeps finding them, including in sectors, sizes and regions no regular filter would surface.
Top 25% on all nine cells of the Stockrankr Matrix™, every trading day for a month, qualifies as Stockrankr+.
Stockrankr++ is the same top 25%, but also over 10 years.
on return, risk and RRR
Facts first. Then a shortlist. Then a critical eye.
Benjamin Graham, Buffett’s mentor, wrote that “the functions of security analysis may be described under three headings.”
Stockrankr’s three default lists follow the same path.
Watching
Keeping an eye on things, with no commitment.
Considering
Comparing and narrowing a shortlist.
Deep diving
Serious research before committing money.

James
He doesn't just take the advisor's word for it. Before agreeing to a new proposal, he checks the stock's full return and risk history himself — is this actually as strong as it's being pitched? He does the same with what he already owns, every few months, so he walks into review meetings with real questions instead of nodding along.
Priya
Cares more about not losing money than about chasing it. She filters straight to the rarest, most consistently top-ranked stocks, checks the full history before considering a position, and treats a low drawdown as more convincing than a strong return ever is on its own.
Chris
Not chasing anything flashy. He's built his own list of stable, boring companies he plans to hold for years, and checks in occasionally to see if anything's changed enough to reconsider.
Aisha
Busy, and fine with that. Sundays, coffee in hand, she reads the weekly summary and closes the app — that's the whole ritual. If a stock she recognises shows up as one of the rare, top-ranked ones, she'll save it to follow later.
Tom
Doesn't trust a number he can't check. Before he believes any ranking, he opens the full breakdown and works through it himself — same formula, same data, same answer he'd get by hand. Once it checks out, he trusts it more than he trusts most financial media.
Marie
A little intimidated by all of it. She opens the main list, starts at #1, and scrolls down, tapping into a stock's details whenever a name catches her eye. No jargon to learn first, no account to set up before she can look.

Return. Risk. Risk-return-ratio.
Dr Richard Johnsson named and published the Risk-Return-Ratio in 2010: return divided by maximum drawdown (risk). Stockrankr is that idea applied to every US-listed stock and ETF.
Rank first by what actually happened. The objective, verifiable facts, across the board.
The formula is public, so you don’t have to take anyone’s word for it. Check the maths yourself.
